A chipped windscreen can still pass a WOF as long as it's outside of the driver's critical vision area (CVA) and the size and location of the chip are within the standards set out by NZTA. Chipped windscreens within in the CVA area can still pass if the repair was carried out by a professional auto glass company and you have a certificate to prove it. Generally, 15mm is the maximum length of a chip repair within the CVA however the limit can vary depending on the type of chip. Outside of the CVA area windscreen chips can be repaired up to 30mm in length.

Will they pass a WOF?

Unfortunately, even if you manage to do a great job doing your own windscreen chip repair with a repair kit from Repco, Super Cheap Auto or even Temu, which will be challenging enough. A WOF inspector will not accept the repair and fail your vehicle if the chip is still visible within the CVA (critical-vision-area). You can still pass a WOF as long as you can obtain a certificate for the repair from a professional auto glass repair shop, however this will be at the discretion of the repair shop and not likely to be free, so it does make more sense to just get a professional to do the repair in the first place. If you're really determined to carry out the repair yourself, we recommend checking out windscreen chip repair guidelines beforehand.
